Computer speed and performance is what we usually look for in a computer. This way, we can maximize the use of it, and do the things that we do. This means being able to run the programs and applications that we need conveniently and easily, and as much as possible, avoiding a computer crash or a slow computer performance.
To tweak a computer means to customize and optimize settings so that it can work quite faster for the user. There are so many ways that this can be done without causing too much hang ups in the computer. Automatic Start-up Items
Automatic start-up items are the ones that would usually load at the moment the computer boots. These are usually programs that enable automatic start-up upon installation because we may have failed to deselect this option or we were not aware of it. All of these items can actually slow out start-up and yet we can prevent it from happening. Many applications such as MSN Messenger, Paltalk, UTorrent and others are automatically launched at Start-up if we do not deselect this option after the first installation. Therefore, we must always make sure that we see to this concern. Lesser automatic start-ups, lesser start-up hassle.
Disk Cleanup
Always, always scan and clean your disk for file errors and all the other clutter that is in it. Or else, you will suffer very poor computer performance. You may use the disk cleanup that comes with the Windows operating system, or use a freeware utility such as Ccleaner to handle that for you. They actually scan and delete temporary unnecessary files that hinder your computer from performing well.
Defragmentation
Files can become fragmented as we read and open them everyday. It uses a scattered resource in our hard disk, and we can actually compress it for optimum performance when we want to. All you have to do is click Start the click All Programs, then, System Tools then select Defragment. This can take hours, and yet will make a good improvement in your computer's performance.

Because Firefox has less add-ons compared to Internet Explorer, it actually performs faster.
Remove Unnecessary Software, Programs and Components
Removing the following can actually improve your computer's performance: Outlook Express, Windows Digital Media Enhancements, Indexing Service, Management and Monitoring Tools, Software that you don't use and need, Fax Service
Tweak your XP Settings
These can make your XP run faster:
1. Click Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced Tab
2. Performance Box>Settings
3. Visual Effects Tab, click on Adjust For Best Performance
4. Press Okay.
System Restore
Disabling system restore can actually be one way to increase your computer's performance. Just make sure you have back up of everything that is in your computer. To do this, just go to Start Menu>Control Panel>Settings, click on the System Restore, and click the checkbox for "Turn Off System Restore on all drives", then OK.
